Physiotherapy lead Pilates

Physiotherapy lead pilates is an exercise format that begins with the correction of spinal alignment and posture then progresses with the recruitment of the bodies core stabilisers to ensure effective muscle balance and activation. Using physiotherapy based techniques to improve muscle strength, length and motor function then develops a strong but flexible core structure which acts as the solid foundation for functional movement and increased physical performance.

After perfecting and mastering these movements the body then adapts them into normal activities of daily lifestyle thereby making everyday tasks less demanding. Because of this improved posture and muscle control the bodies weight bearing structures are better supported which aids prevention of new injury or maintenance of previous injuries.

Physiotherapy lead pilates is the development of the key pilates principles from a physiotherapy perspective aimed at the facilitation of the stabilising muscle system of the body. This can be used as an excellent form of general pilates exercise to improve the bodies function and shape but also for those returning to exercise following injury and/or during rehabilitation.

The 6 key elements or principles to performing the movements are:

Alignment:                    The maintenance of postural alignment throughout movement

Centering:                    The core of the torso as the solid base to any movement

Concentration:              The minds focus on movement and muscle feedback

Control:                             Solid purposeful controlled movements

Precision:                      The effective recruitment of requisite muscles in all movements

Flowing movement:         A flow between movements improves strength and stamina

Your physiotherapist will assess your postural pattern and movement preferences to identify specific areas requiring realignment and muscle activation correction to ensure maximum gain whilst maintaining safety at all times.
